How JPEG compression works

JPEG is a lossy format: every time a photo is saved, the encoder decides how much fine detail to keep. A high setting keeps nearly everything; a lower one smooths away texture the eye barely notices and the file shrinks dramatically. Most phone cameras save at a high setting, which is why their photos are several megabytes.

Rather than asking you to guess a quality number, this tool works the other way round. You choose the size you need, and it saves real JPEG files at falling quality until it finds the best-looking one that is not over your limit. Only when quality alone can't get there does it reduce the pixel dimensions, and never below 320 pixels on the longest side.

Getting the most quality for the size

A smaller target always costs some detail, but how you prepare the photo decides how much.

  • Use the biggest size allowed. A 500 KB limit leaves far more detail than a 100 KB one; don't go lower than you need.
  • Limit the pixels for screen use. Set Largest side to 1200 or 800 pixels for email and websites; fewer pixels at high quality usually look better than many pixels at low quality.
  • Compress once, from the original. Each new round of JPEG compression costs a little more detail.
  • Already small enough? Photos under your target are returned untouched rather than compressed for nothing.

How to compress a JPEG

  1. Add one or more JPEG photos, or drop them onto the box.
  2. Pick the size each photo should end up under - 200 KB is selected to start with - or choose Other and type your own.
  3. Press Compress and download. Several photos come back together in one ZIP file.

How your files stay private

Your browser does the compressing, in memory, on your device. The page is locked so it cannot send data to any other website. When you press Start over or close the tab, everything is cleared.

Limits

  • Up to 20 images, 25 MB each
  • JPG, PNG and WebP; results are saved as JPG (transparent areas become white)
  • Images are never made smaller than 320 pixels on the longest side

Questions

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. They are the same format; .jpg and .jpeg are two spellings of the file extension.

How much smaller will my JPEG get?

That depends on the target you choose. A 4 MB phone photo can usually be brought to a few hundred kilobytes with little visible difference on screen.

Can I compress PNG or WebP images here too?

Yes. They are saved as JPEG, which is much smaller for photos; transparent areas become white.

Is the photo's location removed?

Compressed photos are saved fresh from their pixels, so camera details such as location aren't carried over. A photo that was already under your target is returned unchanged, details included.

Can I compress many JPEGs at once?

Yes - up to 20 photos of up to 25 MB each, downloaded together as one ZIP.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your browser compresses them on your own device. They are never sent to our servers or anyone else's.
